Planning Your Interior Design Budget

Each project is individually scoped to reflect the level of design, documentation and project support required. We begin with an initial consultation to understand your space, goals and priorities, whether you already have plans or are still defining the scope. From there, we prepare a clear proposal outlining recommended services, fees and where your investment will have the greatest impact.

Your overall budget may include design fees, trades, materials, finishes, fixtures, furniture and styling. As a guide, interior design fees typically account for around 10 to 15 per cent of the total renovation or construction budget.

Our project involved a complete renovation and interior design of a two-storey Victorian terrace (circa 1870). Nothing was left untouched, and the brief we gave EBL was executed to the highest standard with a perfect balance of style and creativity. The materials and finishes EBL recommended were always on point, reflected our lifestyle and personalities, and Jenefer was excellent to work with. Our home has been completely transformed with a beautiful flow between traditional and contemporary.

WENDY & BERNIE

Our Approach

Homes need rooms that function well under daily pressure. Kitchens, bathrooms and living spaces carry the biggest load, which is why they sit at the heart of our design approach. Each space supports a different part of life, and the way these rooms function individually shapes how the home feels as a whole.

Kitchens bring people together, so we plan them around movement, storage and the way you cook and gather. Bathrooms and laundries need simple systems, reliable fixtures, and well-planned storage to maintain calm amid fast-paced routines. Living spaces guide the flow of the home, linking comfort, connection and the natural rhythm of daily life.

Eat.bathe.live focuses on spatial planning, practical material choices and a style direction that holds the home together. This helps each room fulfil its purpose while contributing to a cohesive, balanced environment. The design evolves from understanding how you use these core spaces and how they interact with the rest of the home.

These principles shape every service within eat.bathe.live.

How We Work

Every project follows a structured design journey that begins with understanding how you live. We establish a clear style direction, refine layouts for key rooms, and select finishes that balance beauty with everyday function. Detailed documentation supports your builder, while installation and styling ensure the final result feels cohesive and considered.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Our initial consultation is a paid, in-home working session where we discuss your space, lifestyle, goals and challenges, and explore early design ideas. From this meeting, eat.bathe.live defines a detailed scope of work and what’s involved before you commit, including budget considerations, an expected timeline, and a tailored fee proposal.
It helps to think about how you use your home, what’s not working, and any styles or ideas you’re drawn to. Before the first meeting, we’ll ask you to complete a short questionnaire, so we understand your priorities in advance and can focus on what matters most.

Our fees are tailored to the scope of each project and calculated using an hourly rate. The design concept, design development and documentation stages are estimated upfront based on the hours required and invoiced before each stage begins.

Services that are harder to predict, such as design management, procurement, site visits, installation and styling, are charged at an hourly rate in agreed time blocks. Before any work starts, you receive a clear and detailed proposal outlining the scope, fees and expected outcomes, so you know exactly what to expect and what you are paying for.

You’ll receive a comprehensive set of drawings and specifications to guide both construction and procurement. This typically includes specification schedules for materials, lighting, cabinetry, fixtures and furniture, detailed floor plans and internal elevations for kitchens, bathrooms and custom joinery, electrical plans showing lighting, switches and power points, and 3D renders for key spaces to help you clearly visualise the finished design.

These documents keep builders and suppliers aligned, reduce errors and support a smoother build. All trades are required to verify measurements and site conditions during construction, and where structural changes or permits are needed, we coordinate with trusted building designers and engineers to provide the necessary technical documentation.

Timeframes vary depending on the size and complexity of your project. We provide an estimated schedule at the outset and keep you updated as the design progresses, discussing any additional work and agreeing on revised timeframes before proceeding.

As a boutique studio with limited availability each year, early booking is recommended. For new builds or large extensions, it’s best to engage us before council plans are submitted. For smaller projects, we suggest getting in touch well ahead of your preferred completion date.

Absolutely. We regularly collaborate with a range of experienced builders and tradespeople and can suggest trusted professionals who align well with your project’s scope and style. Bringing together a familiar, well-coordinated team often helps the process run smoothly and efficiently.

We’re equally comfortable working alongside your preferred builder or trades. Renovation and construction are collaborative by nature, so we integrate seamlessly with your chosen team to ensure the design is delivered with care and consistency.

Yes. We can review your plans and specifications to ensure the design supports how you live and functions well both practically and aesthetically. This service is provided on a consulting basis and charged at an hourly rate, allowing us to offer clear, focused advice to help you achieve the best outcome for your project.

You can be as involved as you want. We work with many busy clients and design the process to minimise the time and decisions required from you. Our role is to do the thinking, present considered solutions, and guide you through clear, manageable choices, often needing little more than your approval.

Yes. We provide ongoing design support throughout construction and installation to ensure the design intent is maintained, key details are clarified, and the finished result aligns with the overall vision.

Your builder manages the day-to-day site operations, including trades, scheduling and project delivery, while we remain involved to guide decisions, review details and support a smooth, well-coordinated outcome.

Our studio is open Monday to Thursday, 9 am to 4 pm. We can be flexible when needed and will coordinate alternative times where possible. Meetings can be arranged by phone, video or in person, and we recommend email for day-to-day communication to clearly document design decisions and project details.
